On the Stylish Study show, we recently had Stacie, an NLP practitioner and coach, who shared with us about how to be able to get over burnout. If you didn’t get a change to check out that episode or need a refresh, keep on reading for our highlights of that episode.
First, we need to understand what burnout actually is, burnout is a combination of mental, physical and emotional exhaustion ,which can lead yo complicated mental health conditions like depression, anxiety. One of the ways you can identify burnout is that it can make you a lot more tired than you usually are.
Secondly, we need to understand why preventing burnout is so important, burnout lowers our effectiveness, makes you feel hopeless, pessimistic and resentful. To avoid school burnout, it’s important to reduce and manage stress at school. You can do this by identifying what factors are stressful. By working out the most stressful factors you can then start to find ways to reduce the stress that these factors are causing. For example, if doing homework the day before is stressing you out, start doing it as soon as it gets set.
Stacie in the episode talks about how comparing ourselves to others can lead us to a false sense of self-worth. She teaches students how to become aware of their thinking, which can help them deal with their feelings. It is so important to focus on our mental health, and one of the ways we can become more aware of our thinking is through journaling, which allows us to connect with our subconscious. Stacie recommends journaling to help you stay aware of your thoughts and can help you deal with anxiety and depression in the long term.
One of the things that is hardest to manage when you are a student is managing the high workload that comes with being in full time education. Stacie highlights how important it is to plan and make sure that you have short, regular bursts of time out and regular checks in with yourself.
Make you:
Schedule in time to eat well, get fresh air, exercise and take breaks
Set alarms to emend yourself to take regular breaks and get up & walk around
This is so important because it helps you to take your focus away from what you’re doing. So you can give your mind a rest, and you can move your body.
I hope you have all found this helpful, and don’t forget to check out the rest of the podcast episodes here.
